Director's Statement

"I am always very interested in the character, who is so stubborn and insistent that they could only face the fate of self-destruction."

Either they stick with their childhood dream, which has already smashed under the harsh reality, or they insist in a fantasized relationship, which is never the way they see it, their passion and insistence blind themselves from seeing the inevitable truth and the final destruction.

The protagonist, Alexandra, is one of the insistent characters. She believes that love is immortal and exclusive. It should be always fresh and vivid. Love is always exclusive, in Alexandra’s mind. She could share Elvin with nobody, even the baby...

The conflict comes from the difference in the couple’s love philosophy. Elvin shares the love philosophy with the masses. He believes that the love transforms through time; from fulfilling passionate desire to maintaining a responsible family relationship. He switches his concentration from sentimental love relationship to career building which he believes is the best way to show his love and caring towards Alexandra. However, Alexandra is yearning her life to be filled with romantic excitement. She need Elvin’s generous emotion-expression to secure her own identity.

Alexandra’s persistence makes her descent into layers of hallucination. It becomes more and more fierce. Towards the end, Elvin tries to pull Alexandra out, but fails. In fact, no one could save Alexandra from her self-destruction. When she finally loses the baby, when Elvin runs along the gurney in desperation, maybe it is the time Alexandra finds her ultimate relief. The body suffers, but she finally obtains the exclusive attention from Elvin. In her mind, she is descent into their good old time when their love is vivid and exclusive.

Director - Fan, Ni

With a bachelor degree in Journalism, Fan, Ni always finds beauty in true stories of real people. Especially inside the deviant and marginal minds, there is the thin and surrealistic beauty shining on the edge of their smirking lips and the aged wrinkles at corner of their eyes. Portraying real people's life whose voice is unheard or ignored is another life pursuit of Fan, Ni. "NORTH SEA CITY PARK", a documentary featured various figures living at the bottom of the social tier in China.

Born in northeast China, a city constantly covered by snow and ice. The long winter enables Fan, Ni's dark imagination and keen appreciation on ambiguity. Deepest fear and obsessive desire are locked at the bottom of human's consciousness. They burst to get out, however, are confined by human's self-regulation. Fan, Ni's passion is to adventure into the ambiguity and unconsciousness with the help of the cinematic tools, to portray the hidden impulse which derives from the primitive human nature, and to release the subconsciousness to the ground.

Three years' Film/TV Production graduate program at Loyola Marymount University equips Fan, Ni not only with the sophisticated production skill, but also with the comprehensive understanding towards film theory and genre evolution. During the three years, a style of dark and featuring people's twisted mind gradually comes into shape. An impulsive kiss between a teenager and a widow leads them back to the real life ("KISSING"). A homeless lady ventures in the harsh environment in LA Skid Row ("LONDA"). A stubborn pregnant woman is lost in the maze of memory during the pursuit of the permanent love ("Dream of a Lullaby")...   More on IMBD
